Questions

Frequently asked

Do I need a separate grinder for espresso?
Yes. The grind is the single biggest factor in a good cup, and pre-ground coffee goes stale within days and can't be adjusted fine enough for espresso. Either buy a machine with a grinder built in (like the Breville Barista Express) or budget for a separate espresso grinder.
What matters more, the machine or the grinder?
For espresso, the grinder — a good grinder paired with a cheap machine beats a great machine fed by a bad grinder. If your budget is tight, spend on the grinder first.
What does '15 bar' or '20 bar' pressure mean on a machine?
It's the pump's maximum pressure, not the pressure used to brew. Real espresso is pulled at about 9 bar. A higher number on the box is a marketing figure, not a quality one.
Is espresso stronger than regular coffee?
Per ounce, yes. But a mug of drip coffee usually has more total caffeine (~95mg) than a single espresso shot (~63mg) because the cup is so much bigger. More on this in coffee vs espresso.
Burr grinder or blade grinder — which should I buy?
Always a burr grinder. Blade grinders chop beans into random-sized gravel, which brews sour and bitter at the same time. Even a cheap burr grinder is a large upgrade.
Should I buy whole beans or pre-ground coffee?
Whole beans, ground just before you brew. Pre-ground coffee goes stale within days of the bag being opened, and no machine recovers that. See our best coffee beans.
What's the difference between light and dark roast?
Light roasts keep more of the bean's origin character and taste brighter and more acidic; dark roasts taste bolder and roastier, with the roast flavor dominating. Full breakdown in light vs dark roast.
Can a cheap espresso machine make good espresso?
Within limits, yes — a budget machine plus a good grinder and a scale beats a careless setup on an expensive machine. See our best budget espresso machines.
Is a moka pot the same as espresso?
No. A moka potbrews at around 1-2 bar and makes a strong, concentrated coffee — espresso-adjacent, but without the 9-bar pressure or true crema of real espresso (the Bialetti Brikka's valve gets closest).
What's the easiest brewing method for a beginner?
Automatic drip or a French press — both are forgiving and low-effort. Pour-over and espresso reward technique, so they're better as a step two. See coffee brewing methods.
Why does my home espresso taste sour or bitter?
Almost always the grind. Sour and fast means too coarse — go finer. Bitter and slow means too fine — go coarser. The full routine is in how to make espresso at home.
Do I really need a coffee scale?
It's the single biggest jump in consistency you can buy cheaply — it turns "a scoop or two" into a repeatable recipe. See our best coffee scales.
Which tamper size do I need?
It must match your portafilter: 58mm for most prosumer machines and the Gaggia, 54mm for most Brevilles, 51mm for many De'Longhi machines. The wrong size is the most common returned accessory — see tampers.
Is a home espresso setup actually cheaper than a café?
For a daily drinker, almost always — a machine and grinder typically pay for themselves within a year. Run your own numbers with our espresso cost calculator.
How are your prices so up to date?
Every price comes from Amazon's API on a daily refresh and is stamped with the date we fetched it. If our data is more than 48 hours old, the number disappears and the button says "Check price" — we never show a stale figure. More in how we research.
Do you actually test the products?
No, and we don't pretend to. We compile published specifications, run cost-to-run math, and cross-reference owner reviews, then score against a published rubric. Where a number came from someone else, we name and link them.
How does Bean & Burr make money?
Through the Amazon Associates program — we earn a commission when you buy through our links, at no extra cost to you, and it never changes our rankings. Full details in our affiliate disclosure.
