The math: beans per shot = (grams per shot ÷ bag grams) × bag price. Electricity per shot = (watts ÷ 1000) × (active minutes ÷ 60) × rate. We ignore water, milk and descaling — they round to noise next to the beans. Change any input and every figure updates.

What the numbers almost always show

Two things fall out of the math for nearly everyone. First, the machine's electricity is trivial — a few cents a shot at most. The scary-sounding wattage on the box runs for seconds, so it barely registers. Second, the beans are the real cost, and the café markup is enormous: you're paying several dollars for something that costs well under a dollar to make at home.

That's why a machine and grinder usually pay for themselves inside the first year for a daily drinker — and why, if you want to spend less per cup, the lever to pull is the price of your beans, not the wattage of your machine.

How we work it out

The calculator computes beans per shot as (grams per shot ÷ grams per bag) × bag price, and electricity per shot as (watts ÷ 1000) × (active minutes ÷ 60) × your rate. We deliberately ignore water, milk and descaling because they round to noise next to the beans. Every input is yours to change, and every figure updates live — nothing is hidden or assumed on your behalf. That's the whole point: we show our work.

How much electricity does an espresso machine use per shot?
Very little. The high wattage only runs for the seconds it takes to heat and pull, so the electricity cost per shot is typically just a few cents — trivial next to the beans. Standby/idle heating on a machine left on all day uses more, which is why switching it off between uses is the only meaningful energy saving.
What's the biggest cost of making espresso at home?
The beans, by a wide margin. If you want a cheaper cup, the price per bag is the lever that moves the total — not the machine's power draw, which is negligible.
